Discourse has a large number of system-defined user badges, which are awarded for various activities (such as liking someone’s post), but it is also possible to define custom badges that could be awarded for chess-related activities.
Some years ago I suggested using badges on MSA to show things like ‘national master’ or ‘US Chess Delegate’, I don’t know if there’s interest in developing badges like that for the Discourse forums.
You can have many badges (Discourse hands them out liberally, for things like ‘first post’, ‘first like’, ‘first link’, ‘first mention’, etc.), but I think you can only choose two to highlight on your profile page as favorites.
The Discourse meta-forum has a ‘Liquorice’ badge, it isn’t clear what it takes to get it.
Checking further, the number of favorite badges is configurable, with 2 being the default value.
To mark a badge as a favorite, go to the badges list in your profile preferences using the icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen and click on the star in the lower right hand corner of a badge. (Not all badges can be marked as favorites, only the ones with a star.)
BTW, you can already add things like NTD and IA to your profile using the ‘About Me’ box and it will appear on your profile/user card page. (This has the advantage of not requiring staff time to award badges and the disadvantage of not being something that is monitored for accuracy.)
