Do they still play on Waikiki beach?
A lot of people use vinyl boards to cover the tables outside in a lot of places. I did notice that quite a few players used the chess table boards in Washington Square park in New York City. The pieces make quite a cracking sound when moved and the wind can’t lift a corner of the board making the pieces fly.
If I recall correctly, the cement boards in DuPont Circle in DC (I tried to write Dupont but maybe my spell checker knows better than me) have seats on all four sides. Sometimes intense games are played with two people seated and watching on both sides of the board. Talk about having to maintain focus!
In any of these venues, if you can get a table, just put a chess set on it and the players will come. Trips to the outdoor arena need not cost you an arm and a leg. Lots of free games are available but you might hear trash-talk.
I wish my city had a chess park. I believe chess parks should be across the nation.
Get one started
I last visited Dupont Circle this weekend and noticed rather large holes in the ground all over the place. I wondered if groundhogs or gophers had moved in. When evening came I discovered these were ratholes! It is one thing to see the squirrels scampering around but when rats are doing the same thing it is quite disconcerting! The chess veterans there were taking it all in stride though I’m sure some tourists had to be put off by this sight.
Chess parks should be in every city and town in america.
