Good news, and a few more questions now.

Ok, so merging two sections U1400 and Open, doesn’t merge the money into one big pot. Got it.

We had this situation occur quite often when the organizer offered an open section and a section for U 2000, U1800, U1600, U1400, U1200. Note that the initial prize structure did reduce the first prize for each lower section. Thus a player who played up was not only seeking stronger opposition, he was also competing for slightly larger prizes.

If two class sections were combined, say, U2000 and U1800, the TD insisted that the prizes be based on the sections initially entered. If a B player entered the U2000 he was deemed ineligible for the U1800 prize in the combined section. Now a B player who entered the U1800 section could still win the U2000 prize in the combined section. Does this seem right to you?

Unless and until you’re fairly sure you’ll get at least 8-10 players in each section, I think you’re better off holding just a single section event and offering under prizes.

Right. People have the expectation of competing for the prize(s) they signed up for. Even if they have to compete with people of ratings they wouldn’t expect to face, they shouldn’t be penalized.

BTW, I agree with Mr. Nolan. Do one section at least for your first event so you can understand your market.

Another thing you can do is be pretty conservative in your advertised prizes but say ‘other prizes per entries’, which gives you the flexibility to increase your prize amounts or add more place or under prizes based on actual turnout. NO PLAYER ever objects to higher prize funds or more prizes than advertised.

I once directed a CCA tournament in Florida where an extra trophy showed up in the trophy box. It was for top unrated, but this prize had not been included in the pre-event publicity.

There were two unrateds in the tournament. (I suppose there might have been more, had the unrated trophy not been omitted from the publicity.)

One unrated scored 0-5. The other scored 0-2 and then dropped out. I gave the trophy to the former.

So. Our club is now an affiliate and I’ve taken the test and expect to pass it (I hope) for club director. I sent it in last night but it won’t be graded probably until Tues or Wed.

That said. I’m looking through the rulebook about filing a report up to seven days after the event and I found the .pdf of the Tournament Report Form and the Rating Report form (it looks like the exact same form).

That said though how or where do I go to submit this stuff online? Also how do I tell the USCF who played and who won? I don’t see those on the tournament forms.

I’d suggest that you start by going to the home page, clicking on “Clubs & Tournaments”, then clicking on “Tournament Directors”. The files you want to look at are “Getting Started using the USCF’s TD/Affiliate Support Area” and “Frequently Asked Questions about the USCF’s TD/Affiliate Support Area”.

I’m confused. What test did you take and why?

Alex Relyea

His original Club-TD certification expired in 2010. He’s taking the necessary renewal test.

Visit Tim Just’s the80-20td.com and watch the videos.

I very strongly urge you to follow Mr. Ammann’s advice. In the upper left corner of that page, you will find links to three instructional videos: “WinTD Basics,” “SwissSys Basics,” and “USCF Basics.” The description of the “USCF Basics” reads: “Learn how to use the TD/Affiliate area, USCF forms, download rating supplements, submit tournaments on-line, and more…”

Seriously, there is a gold mine of information in those three videos.

Checking them out! Thanks!

Another question. If a player wants to use a carbonless regular old college ruled notebook he bought at a dollar store for his score keeping, is that acceptable as long as he is keeping score?

Thanks,

Ricky

It is OK if you say it is OK. Scoresheets are the property of the organizer so you can dictate, or not, what you want for them to be. Of course it works much better if you want a particular scoresheet for you to supply it.

Also, see this on approved electronic scoresheets:

See Rule 43.
