Withdrawals in Quads

I agree that avoiding an “extra games” section is preferable. However, in the case of a cross-section pairing in a multiple-section Swiss, I prefer putting the game in the section of the player who is playing “higher”. That way, the “lower” player just gets a full point bye in his section, and gets entered as a house player in the “higher” player’s section. The game counts for the “higher” player’s section. I then write the pairing in on the pairing sheet, and reconfigure the computer during the round so that I can just enter the results normally at the end of the round. This also leaves me one less administrative task between rounds - and one less potential error.

(For those who may be wondering why I didn’t just say “higher rated player” and “lower rated player”: Usually in a multiple-section Swiss in a cross-round pairing, the higher rated player in the pairing will also be paired in the higher section. But sometimes the players play up more than one section. So, it is not totally uncommon for, say, an 1800 player in the Open section to play a 1900 player in the Under 2200 section in a cross-section pairing.)

I heard good things about your quad. I had family stuff that kept me away. Keep up the good work; Milford is a potentially good spot for tournaments, within an hour’s drive of a great many patzers.

See? It’s not that hard; they make it seem easy the first time to lure you in…

Bwa ha ha … :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

Yeh, I figured it would turn out easier than all the hypotheticals you were worried about.

It’s good to be a worry-wart, though. That way you’ve anticipated just about every problem that could conceivably arise in the future.

This works well if the “higher” player wins. But, if you promised him a full-point bye in addition to an extra game, you might want to put that game in the other section instead. Of course, if you promised both players full point byes, and the game is drawn, then I guess you’d still be stuck using an “extra games” section. Or, you could even include the game in still another section of the tournament, e.g. if players in the U1800 and U1600 sections draw each other, you could put that game in the U2000 section, and give both of them full-point byes in their respective sections. Whew!

LOL…if I had to go through all of that, I’d probably just check in at the nearest psych ward.

I only give the bye to the “lower” player. The game counts for the “higher” player’s section. I tell both players this before the game starts, so there are no surprises.
