The numbers on the website for those who have signed up don’t look good. The last number I saw was 554 while the based on number is 850. Hopefully the website is not up to date.
I am going!

I’m going as well! Taking the g/f and her two sons with me!
I expect that, given the state of the economy, a lot of people are having trouble justifying the expense of a weeklong hotel stay at $99 a night. Personally, I’m struggling with whether I can attend for just the weekend Swiss.
well, try the Ky Open kychess.org/tourney.php only $45 for a 2 day 5 round g/90 and plenty of hotels for less than $99/night around for only 1 or 2 nights. $5100 prize fund Sat/Sun starts at 10 on Saturday!
(o;
See you there. Poker room Wednesday, back room Thursday->Sunday.
Even in the best of times, I can’t justify paying that at all. I’ll find a cheap motel and drive back and forth before I’ll pay that much per night. Even half that much is pushing it.
But I’m cheap. An ex-girl friend once told me she could have put a lump of coal into my wallet and it would come out as a diamond.
And I thought you had a strong background in math… (Don’t worry, I’m guilty too.)
I’ll be there! I am leaving this AM.
See you guys there. I’m coming in Friday afternoon and playing the two day schedule.
D’oh! I thought you were talking about the U.S. Open in Indianapolis. Didn’t realize there was also a “National Open” in Las Vegas.
You couldn’t pay me to go to Las Vegas.
To the guy posting about the KY Open-
I’ll be there. Interesting format to say the least, but it drew some very strong players last year, so I suppose that speaks for itself.
Perhaps my background is stronger?
What was the attendance number for the 2009 National Open?
Go to this link and add up the number of players in each section:
Great laurels to Akobian and Sevillano! They deserve the top prizes for winning in the last round. They had the guts to fight after experiencing that wonderful US Championship.
Did the other eight who could have tied with them realize the cash difference between a win and a draw? They could have been getting eight to one odds on the bet if they took more chances.
All the best, Joe Lux
This may not be quite the same as the number of unique players (because of things like section changes and re-entries), but based on the crosstables on MSA here’s the player count for the last few National Opens:
2009 702
2008 746
2007 729
2006 715
2005 625

MSA shows 670 for this year. There were only two house players through round five.
If the Game/10 and Polgar events are added then the number jumps a bit.
I just reported the totals on the event search page, they could be off for a variety of reasons.
Since the point of Nolan’s post was to make a comparison, it’s important that all the numbers come from the same source. That way, systemic bias is reduced.
Here’s another table, showing unique USCF IDs by year for the National Open. (I think this includes all the main event sections and not any side events like the Polgar tournament or the G/10 championship.)
