Does anyone know how many spots that the 2011 US Championship / Zonal awards in the upcoming 2011 World Cup? I looked on the tournament website but I couldn’t find it.
According to this page at the FIDE site, fide.com/fide/handbook.html? … ew=article, Zone 2.1 (USA) gets 5 men’s spots and 3 women’s spots.
Sounds like the top 3 from both groups A and B will qualify for the 2011 world cup then. Kamsky will be one of the “rating” qualifiers (highest avg rating between July 2010 and January 2011), so his zonal spot will go to the next person down on the list.
I believe the finishing places for the two groups, and the World Cup spots, would be decided by combining all the players who didn’t make the top four (the top four obviously qualify for four of the World Cup spots), sorting them by points scored in their group using TPR as the tie-breaker (not sure if there are further tie-breakers), which makes the finishing positions as follows (according to my calculations and not official!):
5th - Robson (4.0, 2637)
6th - Onischuk (4.0, 2615)
7th - Ivanov (3.5, 2584)
8th - Seirawan (3.5, 2571)
9th - Kaidanov (3.0, 2531)
10th/11th - Shabalov & Ehlvest (3.0, 2528)
12th - Akobian (3.0, 2524)
13th - Naroditsky (2.5, 2497)
14th - Finegold (2.5, 2489)
15th/16th - Stripunsky & Christiansen (2.5, 2477)
This means should Kamsky make it by rating then Onischuk should get the next spot.
