2014 Illinois Youth Qualifiers

The 2014 Illinois Youth Qualifiers came to a conclusion a few short hours ago. The event is sponsored by the Warren Junior Chess Scholars Program of the Illinois Chess Association.

The event showcases three sections: Denker, Barber, and Girls - all with the same time control of Game-90 + 30/sec increments. The winners of these events are the Illinois representatives at their respective national championships.

Players are invited based on rating (in this case the December supplement).

The Denker and Girls are 5R-RR while the Barber is a 5R-SS (14 players).

Our winners this year:

Denker - NM Sam Schmakel on tie breaks over Max Zinski
Girls - Miranda Liu on tie breaks over Marissa Li
Barber - CM and 2013 World Youth U10 Silver Medalist - David Peng with a perfect 5/5 score!

The event was held on Friday night, all day Saturday and Sunday. Special thanks to Matthew Hollaway and Chris Wainscott for entering all games into Chessbase to preserve some of the wacky games for generations to come

The event has been USCF rated already - uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?201403020362.0 and the Denker and Barber sections submitted for FIDE rating.

Congrats to the winners, great games by all of the players, and thanks to the parents for driving their child(ren) back and forth all weekend long!
