Agon Speaketh---Listen Up!

The final details, venue and sponsors, of the match for the World Chess Championship will be announced “in due course.” Agon’s statement of one week ago follows:

While it is not the company’s policy to comment on tittle-tattle and gossip, we note the idle speculation that the city for the World Championship Match in November has yet to be finalised.

We are delighted to re-confirm that the World Championship Match will take place in New York in November. Any suggestion to the contrary is nonsense.

The venue and the sponsor line-up will be announced in due course.

New York is a State, not a City. New York City is a City. So they are still being quite vague, but at least they narrowed it down to 54,556 sq miles.

People from NYC only refer to it as NY as in Manhattan.

I don’t think this is correct. I think they call it New York City much like people from Seattle call it Washington State. This is different from, say, Oklahoma, where the capital is Oklahoma City in Oklahoma county. Notice the capitalization.

Alex Relyea

People from the Northwest rarely call it Washington State, we usually just say Washington.

People refer to the place where Seattle is . . .???

Alex Relyea

When you say Washington to a person from the Right Coast, it means Washington, D. C.

Micah is correct. Other people may refer to Washington State. But you said “people from Seattle call it Washington State” which is definitely not true. I lived there for over 40 years, so you may take my word for it.

Translation:

Which means that suggestions that the match will be held outside New York, after November, or both are far from nonsense.

Agon is not a local to New York, and they are making a press statement so I doubt they would refer to New York City as New York. I’m from Oklahoma, we don’t call anything Oklahoma except when referring to the state. When talking about Oklahoma City we say, OKC or The City. When referring to Oklahoma County we say Oklahoma County.

As for the Washington debate, being stuck in the middle of the Country we have to just take cues from the context of the conversation as to which Washington is being talked about. But generally people say Washington for both, then clarify if needed as to Washington State or D.C.

My point was just that Agon is being vague in their press releases. Vagueness typically denotes 2 things, 1. uncertainty or 2. deception. I’d guess uncertainty at this point, but wouldn’t put deception past Agon.

Yay!!! Semantics.

Agon’s press person is presently Dylan McClain who is a former Manhattanite now living in Paris (France, not Texas). I don’t think he’s referring to Poughkeepsie…

Paris Ky is quite nice. It is the county seat of Bourbon County. And Versailles is just down the road - although around here we call it "Vur sales’ ".

Ever been on Bur-GUNDY Street in New Orleans? And New Yorkers often frequent House-ton Street.

No, but I have been to the nice little Georgia town of Lafayette (luh-FAY-it)…

There’s one in Louisiana, too. Festival Acadien is well worth the trip. Last time I was there I heard Beau Jocque not too long before he died too young as many Zydeco performers do. “What ya gonna gimme for for that piece a corn bread?”

I think it’s been established that New York can refer to either the city or the state. That part of the conversation is on topic to the OP. The rest is not.

New York Ky is between Paducah and Kevil on US 60. Population is about 10.

So you don’t think anyone is referring to that?!?

Or New York Mills, Minnesota.

Bill Smythe

Bob, it’s hard to say what’s going on in the collective mind of Agon…
