Carlsen on "60 Minutes"

Yesterday (Feb. 20] Magnus Carlsen was profiled on CBS “60 Minutes.”

What do you think?
I thought the story made top-level chess look good (more than Magnus himself perhaps), and that it may prove to be inspirational to many young players.

Well done. He came across very well. Within the time frame, they covered his life and chess as well as could be expected. Very positive for Carlsen and chess.

Thanks for the link. Here in the Midwest some sports program messed up my DVRing the segment (i was organizing/directing Sunday).

I think you’re deluding yourself if you imagine that many young players watch 60 Minutes.

Well, maybe they’ll see it on YouTube.

I could have done with less gee-whiz from the interviewer, but other than that, it was a complimentary portrayal of the game.

I too was not home Sunday, but I anticipated a possible long-running sports event (always seems to happen on weekends). So I set my DVR to record for two hours instead of one.

Tim, I can probably get my copy to you (somehow) if you still need it.

That was pretty much my reaction. The interviewer spent all his time fawning over Magnus in utter disbelief of his superhuman abilities rather than saying anything interesting about or to him. But I’m happy for any positive depiction of chess in mainstream media, and to be fair, I got the sense that getting interesting answers from Magnus would have been pretty challenging for anyone.

Thanks for the offer Bill. I am happy with viewing the link posted earlier. I knew about the sports but setting it to record longer conflicted with two other items set to also record at that time.
