Database Sources

Suffering at times from being tight with my wallet, I find it difficult to fork out money to Chessbase or Convekta(sp?) to buy game databases. So, I’ve done a little searching for free online bases, especially those that go beyond 2006. Not much post-2006 that I’ve found.

Here’s one that I found with an interesting variety of annotated games. Any other sources for free pgn files out there??

If you are wanting to keep up to date with what is going on internationally you need to grab twic every week. They have the latest games in Chessbase as well as PGN format each week, along with a summary of what has taken place.

The archives go back 1998. It appears you can buy the issues from 1995-1998 on CD.

This is what gets downloaded each week when you select get new games in Chessbase.

Edit:

If you are looking for something to use that is free instead of Chessbase or Chess Assistant there are the following free database programs:

http://scid.sourceforge.net/
http://chessdb.sourceforge.net/ – based on scid

I use Chesslabs quite a bit. Very handy for building databases of variations I’m interested in.

Excellent. Thanks! I’m using Chessbase Light Premium and CA 9.1. Went easily into CB Light.

Pretty much everything except monrovia games
chessgameslinks.lars-balzer.info/

has 30,000 annotated

Now all we need is the memory+understanding pill to go along with them.

Here’s an excellent database listing by player, opening, etc:
