disabled players

We have a local player that is very good and loves the game.

He doesn’t want to play rated games. But maybe he would change his mind under the right situation.

I see the rule book would allow a TD the right to excuse scorekeeping if an assistant was not available. So one hurtle cleared.

Second hurtle: This player gets very nervous (he is problem however is medical). Can he excused for brief periods without a clock penalty and therefore take a break?

Or at least given one penalty free break a game?

Slightly unusual situation as you can tell

I don’t think so. How long are we talking about, anyway? If it is just five minutes or so, I take those kind of breaks myself, and I can’t imagine that it would change things much. If it is a half hour or so, then I can easily see it disrupting the tournament. A good solution is to pick long enough time controls where it won’t be a problem to be away from the board for a “brief period”.

Yeap I supposed this is right.

Maybe what I can do is play a match against him this Summer (I will have more time) with a sliding time control.

I wish I could find a stronger player for him though.

-------------------------follow up question

I presume that USCF doesn’t have a way of contacting people except thru the mailing labels.

It sure would be handy for me to find a person that lives in the area. But I cannot find him on google (which sometimes finds addresses/phone). So I wonder if the USCF could provide something besides mailing labels (which he might well prevent them from selling via a database flag). I don’t think so.

Different individual btw

I believe that USCF has a mail forwarding service. I think it is usually used for prizes that are unclaimed, but I think if you send it to the USCF with his ID number, they’ll forward it. Please verify this before you do that, though.

thanks I will try and find out

Sort of sounds like me. I simply gave up the game because of problems using my hands, and I’m taking enough meds to bring a horse to it knees. :frowning: Competitive chess for the most part is over, but I still love to play. You might want to have him investigate Quick Chess  – a rather short skittles-like game where nothing really is on the line, and the object is to have FUN!!! Time Controls range from G/60 to < than G/5.

I will try that with him Tuesday (if I remember).

Not rated. But he did love speed chess at one time
