If you have the extra rated section, what color should you give the players? If the extra rated section only has two people for only one game, as most extra rated sections are. The director could flip the coin for the color, it would be acceptable. The director could look at the tournament to check what order the player would get. In any case, the pairing program will not check or make corrections for the color history in the other section.
The reason for the the extra rated section, as the person that would get a bye, is much weaker then the house man. Would it be fair for the adult class A player to get white, and the scholastic player as a class F gets black? Im very sure the adult class A player would still win as black against the scholastic class F player. Myself, would give the scholastic player white if the house man is more then 200 points higher.
My question, if the house man in the extra rated section is more then X amount of points higher then the other player in the section. Would it be fair to have the house man get Black? Then again, can understand the house man would be upset to get Black all the time.
Rating differences shouldn’t matter. In the extra games section, it is just as fair (neither more so nor less so) to give white to a 1900 playing a 900, as it would to a 1500 playing a 1300.
Flipping a coin is an acceptable idea.
Another acceptable idea would be to look at due colors in the other section(s) of the tournament. If the 1900 is due white in the other section he is playing in, and the 900 is due black, you could go ahead and give the 1900 white.
That is a acceptable idea. If the bye player does get the due color in the extra rated section. If the player plays in the next round, in the standard tournament. The pairing program is going to give due color again. As the pairing program only understands the color history (example – WB bye) of the standard program.
If the house mans color history is BW, would get a bye in round 3 and black in the extra rated game. So the color history for the 4 round would be BW (bye) in the standard tournament. Even that the true color history would be BWB.
If the computer program sees BW (bye), the program could give the player BW (bye) B … even if the true color history would be BWBB. Oh well SwissSys 6.0 could need some tweaking to take care of that.
Was just thinking the house man would not be in the tournament. Its’ not standard to have the house man for all the rounds, just to cover the rounds with byes. Anyway, only seeing myself set up the extra rated game between adult and scholastic. Would have to be in a very good mood to have the extra rated game between adult and adult. Could only see it happen between adult and adult, if the bye player would be out of the prize money.
If I’m cross-pairing players form existing sections, I give them the colors they would have had if they had been paired “normally.” If there is no color history, you just have to toss.
