failing to become GM: keep trying?

Is there a limit to the number of times a player can attempt to win GM norms or other high titles? Or can one fail, try again, and repeat as often as he likes?

Why would there be a limit? If someone takes a while to improve, but they have improved to that level eventually, then why should they be denied the title?

That said, I think remember hearing about a time limit on norms expiring. So if you earn a norm, then quit playing for 20 years, then try to get the title again, you’ll have to earn all the norms again from scratch, because the first one no longer counts.

Norms used to have to be earned over a specific time period, but that is no longer the case, FIDE norms no longer expire.

Ahh, interesting. Didn’t know GM norms no longer expire.

When did FIDE change that? Not that it exactly pertains to me, but still curious about it. Why was it changed anyway?

If I remember correctly, it used to be that you had something like 18 or 24 months to earn the necessary norms, that was probably changed because of obviously deserving players who took just a little longer than that to earn their final norm.

I don’t recall exactly when FIDE Regulation 1.50e was changed to eliminate the expiration date on norms, and the FIDE handbook doesn’t say, either, but I’m pretty sure that’s been the case since at least 2005.
