Kasparov Arrested

The following article was written before the Moscow demonstration where he was arrested:

In this article the name of his group is given as “Other Russia”, a play on the phrase “Mother Russia” – and a good one. But I think that play works only in English! So this confirms what we know from elsewhere: it’s largely a movement among the exiles or diaspora (to English speaking countries).

Will Kasparov be going on to Petersburg ?

Now the Russian government says they over-reacted:

NTV showed Garry Kasparov, the chess champion who has become an opposition leader, shouting from inside a police bus, but the voiceover said “he made comments in English to foreign journalists.”

Russian police raid Kasparov office as opposition picks leader

Moderators, this is of topic in this forum. I earlier posted this new on the All things chess forum which is where it belongs.

BL

It’s also worth noting that a similar post on this subject is in the ‘All Things Chess’ forum.

I guess you meant that I should remove the direct quote so I did so.

But isn’t that permitted by fair use, since it’s fully attributed?

Fair use does not mean the same thing as proper attribution.

The major wire services (which is where it appears that story came from) have started monitoring the Internet for unauthorized reproduction of their stories.

Thank you for editing your post.

No problem, I don’t want us to get into trouble.

But still, wasn’t it within the bounds of fair use? Don’t worry I won’t repost the text in any case …

Well, I spent nearly 20 years working in the publishing industry, so my views on ‘fair use’ are probably oriented towards those of the copyright holder.

Here’s a link to an article on fair use from the copyright office.

copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html

Since copyright is essentially an economic right, the claim that reproducing someone’s article (or substantially all of it) may deny the copyright holder the right to benefit from such reproduction is probably the most significant limitation on ‘fair use’. In the case of something found on the web, by reprinting it without authorization you may be denying the copyright holder some advertising revenue based on web views, not to mention potentially increasing the USCF’s advertising revenue, both of which impact the economic benefit the copyright holder is due under the law.

(One of my personal goals as an ‘information provider’ on the Internet has been to avoid becoming a major precedent in case law. Don’t think it can’t happen, either. A couple dozen college students at the University of Nebraska, among other places, got sued for copyright infringement by the recording industry.)

You have to admire a man that is willing to stand up for what he believes in. It is hard to stop people who are right, and just keep coming. Good Luck Kasparov !!

I guess if I had quoted a few lines it would have been OK but since I quoted about half the article that was overdoing it. That makes sense.

Content deleted by MN, no longer relevant.

I’d be happy to once the moderators move this thread over to where it belongs, on the thread that I began with the same title.

If I could get the stupid merge tool to work, they’d have been merged yesterday. :sigh:

It’s worth noting that the other thread was started back in April, the LAST time Kasparov was arrested, so merging the two topics would result in that post being the lead post in the merged thread, not Brian’s post from the other day.

However, I think this is the proper forum for the subject, and I did finally get the two topics merged.
