Young folks might be horrified by the starkness of this month’s Chess Life cover. Black & white photo of Denker & Steiner, red & black cover. But this is what Chess Life (and Review) looked like in the 1970s! (Only not so good.)
Anyway, I thought the cover & the article itself were nice end-of-pandemic callbacks to another time when serious chess, after having ground to a virtual halt, recovered nicely.
You could also compare this cover with the red-black-white covers of Chess Review from 1946 (the year of the Denker-Steiner match). I want to remind readers that the “digital archive” is a treasure trove! Visit uschess.org, scroll down to the bottom, find the words “digital archive”. All back issues of Chess Review (1933-1969) and Chess Life (1946 to present)!
