The National High School Championship and the All Girls National Championship are both scheduled for April 16-18th in Columbus, Ohio.
Are they both at the Hyatt Regency? It would seem to be a bit of a stretch to try and play in both events, so what would be the reason for intentionally scheduling both tournaments for the same time?
Except you are overlooking a few “minor” details starting with the fact that the events have two different organizers (KCF and USCF), separate TLAs, and two different Chief TDs. Just like having two different weddings in the same hotel…
The HS and the All-Girls are two completely separate events as far as advance registration is concerned, too. There’s nothing to prevent someone from registering for both.
We do prevent someone from registering for more than one section of a national event, such as the HS. That limitation applied to SuperNationals IV, too, so as far as players were concerned it was just ONE event.
I thought the concern was that if you’re constantly leaving the room of one tournament (to go play your game in the other) you could be suspected of cheating. So that even if you register successfully for both tournaments, you would then find yourself in an impossible situation.
And indeed, in one tournament, is it illegal to discuss an ongoing game of the other tournament? Catching such cheating would require communication between the two “venues.”
I certainly don’t RECOMMEND playing in concurrent events, but it’s rather difficult to write (and then effectively implement) a policy to prevent it, especially if the events aren’t being run by the same organizer/TD staff.
When is the USCF going to get around to publishing details about the US High School Championship? It would help schools and parents to make plans. There is a need for lead time to get permission slips, approval by school boards, and other logistical matters.
You can also get to those pages from the tournament registration system, secure2.uschess.org/webstore/tournament.php. There’s a box promoting these events on the home page, too.
Thanks for the links. I will relay them on to parents.
But would it not be better if this information was posted in the TLA section of the website and in Chess Life? It is not listed there as yet. Nor are the links posted along with the event in the National events section.
I also noted that several tournaments listed in Chess Life have not made it to the website. (eg. Holiday Blues event in Dayton, Ohio) How often is the TLA section of the website updated? Does the event have to be in Chess Life first before it is posted online? Would seem to be opposite of what one would expect.
I will offer the same advice I gave Jim T. in another thread: Send further corrections or recommendations to jdubois@uschess.org and eliminate the middleman.
As far as I know, the TLAs from Chess Life are updated once a month, though Joan does occasionally post corrections. I believe the policy has been that a copy of the printed TLA isn’t made available online until the issue of Chess Life in which the TLA is scheduled to appear comes out.
