I have often wondered what it would take to hold a tourney in which states compete for a National Amatuer/or Junior Team Title. Let me clarify this a little.
Each state (interested/willing/able) would sanction a team (or teams) to represent them in a national tourney. The tourney would begin with a regional cycle that would eventually lead to a championship final.
The championship format could utilize some of the ideas from the US Chess League (wonderfully succesful and well run). For example, a sanctioned TD could oversee an ICC/WCL playing site for most of the cycle. Or, the championship could be staged like this for all “rounds”, including the championship final.
I believe that the idea of state vs. state (whether amatuer or Junior) would generate some enthusiasm and state pride. As an East Coaster I often wonder which state has the “best” players overall. Is it Mass, NY, NJ etc…? What team in the east wouldn’t want to play a match against Texas, California, AZ etc…? (Please do not be offended if I do not mention your state 
)
This thought is not necessarily new. The regional Amatuer Team tourneys are just one example- but these events are more team oriented than state.
I would appreciate some feedback. I do believe that this is doable with a team of motivated regional and national level volunteers. If there is any serious interest from USCF, I could put together a proposal (or starting point).
