Plus Score Tournaments.

The above quote came from the Issue forum. I’ve got a question/idea about the Plus Score System.

Would it be possible/feasable to have a prize for the weaker players, a consolation prize of sorts. It would be available to all players with 1 point going into the 4th round. Any of those players that end up with two points would share the consolation prize.

I don’t think anyone in the third round would opt to lose to become one point just to make themselves available to this because if they were to win in the third round they would have 2 points and possibility of scoring 3.

This would give the plus score format the equivalance of a D prize.

I’ve seen some people take out the 2.5 point prize of $10 and offer $10-$15 for anyone who wins their last round game and doesn’t qualify for another prize.

I’ve offered a $10 upset prize, and in some cases a $10 per round upset prize.

Here’s an interesting variant on the ‘plus score’ theme, a ‘minus score’:

I know of VERY few organizers who have been able to pull this off on a regular basis.
Class prizes are most often a better “draw”. From what I have witnessed, this is
a strategy for slow club demise.
