Registering Players with FIDE

For the edification of those of us who aren’t in the know, what’s the process of registering someone for FIDE? Does that have to go through the player’s federation, or can someone (a la mode USCF) self-register?

In another topic,

At the U.S. Open last year I believe it was Franc Guadalupe who passed out sheets with required information that the US Chess office needed to register someone with FIDE under the USA flag. They include name, DOB, email address, as well as a space to sign indicating you wish to play under the USA flag. If you can’t/do not wish to sign that, you must go to your preferred country’s FIDE affiliate before the tournament. It is also possible to play under the FIDE flag, and perhaps someone can write about that. It is, however, very expensive. In short, it takes a significant amount of time, especially if there are foreign players.

You can’t self-register, except perhaps for the independent FIDE flag. As far as USCF members are concerned, they just enter the tournament and as far as they are concerned, they are automatically registered with FIDE. In actuality it is the player’s federation that must do the registration process. Currently Tracey Vibbert handles all FIDE stuff for US Chess.

True from the player point of view. If the organizers want the tournament rated faster, they’ll collect the necessary info from players who are new to FIDE at registration. At minimum, that’s name, date of birth, and confirmation that the player wants to play under the US flag.

Is this true/acceptable by arbiters any longer?

Edited for clarity.

From the last few FIDE rated tournaments I’ve participated in, yes, that’s exactly how it’s worked. From the Arbiter/organizer side, we, along with Tracey, identify everyone who needs a FIDE ID. I’ve only been semi-involved in this step myself, so I may not have all the details down yet. I would imagine that the US Chess Office already has all of the pertinent information for US Chess members (name, DOB, etc.). But, I suppose it might make things go faster if that was requested.

When I got my FIDE ID after playing in one of Sevan’s tournaments, he never me asked for any of that info. It was handled directly. I played in the tournament as a normal USCF member and voila, I had a FIDE ID sometime later.

Non-US players, though, is a completely different matter. They must be registered by their respective federation before the tournament begins.

Edit: Fixed my quote to remove that awful phrasing.

When I submitted an event for FIDE rating recently, I was told by Tracey an email address is also required.
