Roomate Needed!

Hello, I’m looking for a potential roommate for the Pacific Coast Open on July 19-21. I’m in my 20’s, male, non- smoker, playing 3 day schedule. If interested please reply to timidaking@gmail.com
Thanks

There really should be a designated place (either in the forums or elsewhere) for these kinds of requests. Side feedback, however, is clearly not that place.

All Things Chess is where these things have customarily been put.

The original poster has not added a US Chess member ID to their member profile, so the only place where posts are permitted is the Site Feedback category. (Allowing posting by all logged-in users in that category is a non-modifiable Discourse feature, the only way to prevent it is to eliminate the Site Feedback category completely, which we are reluctant to do.)

If a member ID is added (and the member is 16 or older, which requires a birthdate in US Chess member records, as the ‘birthdate’ field in the Discourse profile only tracks month and day, not the birth year), the forums staff will add this member to the Adult Members group which grants access to the US Chess Issues category and posting privileges in several categories.

The Drupal single-sign-on (SSO) code that we are using doesn’t know about the custom field for member IDs. We have looked at ways to add IDs based on email addresses but haven’t implemented anything yet. There will presumably be a different SSO module for the Leago system, so that’s probably the time to make those kinds of improvements.

As to having a separate category for things like roommates and rides, that has been suggested to senior staff, but not approved. I think there are some concerns over potential for abusing it. And we aren’t exactly overwhelmed with such requests, so it doesn’t seem like a pressing need.

Maybe you could eliminate the default Site Feedback forum and create a new forum with a similar name and purpose?

Having somewhere that people who haven’t gotten into the adult users group yet can post (usually because we don’t have their ID thus can’t verify their eligibility) seems to be serving a valid purpose, and we’ve had only a handful of posts in that category in general. If/when we can get the sign-in process to update membership information, then it may no longer be needed.

Sometimes I will look up the member ID based on email address and add it to the member record, then add that member to the Adult Users group, if eligible.
