The House of Staunton Professional Series Chess Set used by the competitors in the 2010 U.S. Chess Championship has a strangely designed bishop. At first I couldn’t put my finger on why it looked so strange. Then it dawned on me . . .
That design isn’t so strange. I’ve seen plenty of sets that overemphasize the slit in the bishops.
But yeah, Beaker does look like he’d be a bishop if he was a chess piece. Of course, he acts like he’d be a pawn.
It’s not so much the slot as the lack of tapering on the bottom of the bishop’s head, giving it a “chinless” look.
I prefer the old Windsor Castle bulbous bishops.
