Time for some clock fiddling words of wisdom in the April '24 Just the Rules

Once upon a time, wasn’t it possible to comment on Just the Rules?

Didn’t you just do that?

No, I mean commenting on the article, not the Forum post.

BCCA Tournament director.

I don’t know if we still have that capability. I suggest you contact Dan Lucas or John Hartmann.

The last time it had that capability, it said that my reply would display my email address for all to see. That had never happened befrore. That was a turn-off, so I chose not to post there.

Ever since then, it has no longer offered the option to post there.

Not that there is too much of a problem posting a reply on the main forum, though. Who knows, it might even get a few more reads that way.

The ‘reply’ function on stories posted at new.uschess.org is separate from the Discourse-hosted forums, so what it requires or displays is not the same as what the Forums would require or display.

I don’t have access to readership data, so I don’t know how many people see Tim’s column via the home page or via the Forums. I suspect the home page one might generate more hits, though, because it is probably a bit more visible, at least as long as it remains on the list of current stories.

I looked at some of the recent stories posted on new.uschess.org, I don’t see any that have the ability to add comments. (I see some that have links to Twitter that include replies on Twitter, though.) Have they stopped allowing comments there altogether?

I know Tim posts links to it on at least two Facebook pages (Members of the USCF and US Chess Senior Players), probably more, as well as on the forums.

We are talking about Tim Just’s “Just the Rules” columns, which appear monthly. Until a few months ago it was possible, after reading the column, to post comments, which would then be visible to future readers of that particular month’s column along with the column itself.

About three months ago, that ability to post comments disappeared. Of course, it is still possible to post replies in the forums directly.

Yes, I understand, and if there’s been a change in procedures, that would be something that Dan or John would be aware of, which is why I suggested contacting them.

I started the practice of posting the links to the column on both the Forums and on Facebook so that it was available to a wider audience. Comments on Facebook are, for the most part, not monitored. I had not realized that comments on the home page posting were no longer available. Those comments added valuable reactions to the column. Right now, it looks like any reaction to the monthly “Just the Rules” is limited to the Forums and Facebook. I hope that the home page reactions can once again become available.

Whatever happened for the undying support of the Tap 'n Set, this was the answer to ditch mechanical clocks. The Tap 'n Set is harder to catch warping time.

Sounds like somebody is trying to over medicate the situation.

Apparently you are mixing up your adjectives. “Mechanical” almost certainly refers to analog clocks, which are pretty much out of the picture nowadays anyway.

The main point (or at least one major point) of the Tap 'n Set is to be able to set a whole bunch of clocks at the same time by setting just one of them and letting that one broadcast its settings to all the others. This can be extremely handy for organizers who furnish clocks.
