Tournament Locations

Does anyone have any suggestions for a place to host tournaments which would reduce my expenses?

It seemed quite difficult to find the current place I’m hosting, a hotel conference room. This cost is $157 per day, which after getting 6 players at my last $25 EF tournament, I took a dramatic loss, which since I’m a new club, it was taken directly out of my personal pocket.

I tried the local library, Lions Club, Subdivision Community Club House, Local Churches, which all either were not suitable locations or were more expensive than my current place.

Ah geeze Dave, that’s a hard hit. Don’t ever pay that much for a site for a local monthly tournament. Try some restaurants, i.e. Pizza places with dining rooms. You can usually get a room by getting your players to buy food. What was wrong with the libraries and churches? If you could hook up with a church for your regular club meetings, you might find them willing to alow you to use their Fellowship Hall for Staurday tournaments too. Maybe have to pay a little something - we paid $300/year at the church we used to use, until some ppl messed us up by being jerks. We were there for 5 years (a really great place). We paid for it through membership dues. How large of a weekly group do you get - assuming you have a weekly group?

tww

I’m hosting monthly tournaments. The hotel has a restaraunt we use for free for a G/10 bi-weekly quick tournament.

There is a local director hosting one at a restaraunt, but I’ve heard that it’s too loud.

I tried a few churches around here, but didn’t have much luck.

We hold ours at a local mall in an empty room

Have done that before.

Oldin folks centers are sometimes an option as are jewish community centers. There are lots of those here in Los Angeles.

Mr. Thunder Chicken:

Have you thought of a apartment complex or a place that has a chess club. The reason to point out a apartment complex, as the site I’m going to have my tournaments’ every month is given me a free site. It was even a great shock on my part of what they want to give for the “Greater Grand Rapids Chess Club”. As they have been having a chess club without having a director, looking on there part for a director till making contact with the managment.

This is the plan they want to give me and you could get something like this yourself Thunder.

  1. Having a chess club meeting at the commnity center on Mondays from 7 pm till 10 pm, with free comfort food for the players.

  2. Having a tournament in the community center that can have up to 100 people, making the chess club and the tournaments at the same site. The site is free, and the parking is also free.

  3. Wll also provide food and drinks during the tournament, so the players do not have to drive for food during the tournament.

  4. The other special deal, after the tournament the players can use the pool and steam room right after the tournament. This is also free for the players, not sure how long they can be in the pool and steam room after the event. Not sure if the players are willing or wanting this option.

  5. For the director and other directors, as they want to get “Michigan Chess Association” state tournaments. Will give a room for the directors, its’ a cabin style room. This is given free for the directors only.

  6. If the community room does get small, as it only can hold 100 people. Or they are going to have a larger tournament, the gym will be used. The floor plan is 6700 square feet, it is also given away free for myself or other directors willing to hold a large tournament needing more then 100 people.

  7. Since telling them the need to get onto the internet for the information on the MSA. They have gotten but not let have in place 2 computers (will be up for the tournament January 8th) and a printer. Also they will have the software for the pairing programs, not sure it will be in and installed for the January 8th tournament but will be there for the Febuary 5th tournament.

:sunglasses: There is also talk of having a TV crew come out for one of the tournaments. It could happen, for some reason being on the local news. There is talk of having a newspaper come out and do a story.

There are other package deals to be made or have been done. Some of these deals are well just for me as being the director, have not the time to talk about them. Well Thurder Chicken, hope you can find a nice site and make a great deal with being a director. With the tournaments going to be happening in the Grand Rapids area, or will say the tournaments in the city of Wyoming Michigan; would not have ever thought this type of tournaments would ever happen as myself as a director.
