Enjoy providing service to the community? Interested in learning more about an academic subject? No matter what your hobby may be, chances are that there’s a club on campus dedicated to it.
“People want a lot from the club,” said Prisha Davda (11), president of Chess Club. “They expect that we immediately start going to [chess] tournaments.” What’s unique about her situation is that Chess Club is a new club this year, and this has required additional efforts to prepare the club for function. “I’m trying my best to meet up to people’s expectations, but I also think preparation is necessary,” she describes. “We are all working on planning a tournament [rather than diving straight in].”
I started a chess club in my town late last summer. I did a lot of advertising for it on social media and put up flyers at the local community college, high school, and public libraries, as well as some businesses. The local news paper also did a story on us. But its a pretty small town so I wasn’t sure what type of turn out I would get. Fast forward about 7.5 months later and we have built up to the point where we have about 10 regular members who show up almost every week, and perhaps another 10 people who show up sporadically. Occasionally [such as last week] we still get a new face. I haven’t been pressured to hold any organized tournaments yet, but people play rated games at club. I’m happy with the overall success.
