“Various references to the US Senior Open were changed to the John T Irwin National Tournament of Senior State Champions, which is now the name of the tournament.”
I thought the US Senior Open and John T Irwin National Tournament of Senior State Champions were two different tournaments.
The wording “which is now the name of the tournament” has been removed from the article. However, the references to the US Senior Open have been replaced by the Irwin Tournament, as the US Senior Open does not qualify a player for the US Senior Championship.
To avoid any concern or confusion, US Chess has confirmed:
The winner of the 2021 US Senior Open was included by the host of the 2022 US Senior Championship (St. Louis Chess Club) as a player who will receive an invitation.
The St. Louis Chess Club also confirmed that it will include the winner of the 2022 US Senior Open as an invited player for the 2023 US Senior Championship.
To ensure that there is no ongoing confusion, at some point during the year, the issue will be more generally addressed with the EB and will clarify the invitations from various events.
