Adult Chess Clubs - Dallas -Ft.Worth area

Hello Everyone,

I am looking for a chess club in the Dallas area that is not restricted to children and not “tournament club” only… I would like to find a club that offers, lessons, lectures, casual play, tournaments, activities, etc.

I’ve always assumed that that is what a chess club would be about. I am happy that the DCC is so active and puts on so many tournaments… At least 3 per week… However, I have been wanting … in the beginning herre… not just to play accross the board rated games!! Just seems like I should be able to find a club here in this the 7 largest metropolitain area in the US…

Any advice is so appreciated…

Thank you!

Maq

Just wanted to share this information left me on another thread… that led into where to play chess over the board…thought someone else might like to at least start here! good luck everyone… anyother places or casual groups in dallas, ie durring day are appreciated… Maq

Just saw that this thread took a turn to OTB play. Maq, there are a few “just play” clubs around Dallas besides the tournament-focused Dallas Chess Club. Most of these clubs also hold tournaments which are smaller than DCC’s tournaments. It’s possible to play chess every night of the week in the Dallas area, just depends on your location and how far you’re willing to travel. I’ll leave Fridays and the weekend to dallaschess.com or the TCA tournament listing.

Mondays – Denton Chess Club – Denton Chess Club meets every Monday night from 6:00-9:00 at the Denton Public Library North Branch,3020 North Locust, Denton, Texas 76209.

Tuesdays – Tarrant County Chess Club – The TCCC meets every Tuesday night from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore at the North East Mall in Hurst, Texas (beside Best Buy). They also hold small tournaments throughout the year. More details at tarrantcountychessclub.org.

Wednesdays – 3 rated games at Dallas Chess Club. Usually a smaller tournament and not as intense as DCC Friday nights or a weekend tournament.

Thursdays – Lewisville Chess Club – @ Borders Bookstore / 2403 S. Stemmons, Suite 100 / Lewisville, TX, 75067 (FM 3040 and I-35, beside Vista Ridge Mall). 6:30 or 7pm to close. Last I knew, FM Keith Hayward is a regular and was always up for a blitz game and conversation on how to get better.

EVERY Night – There are always players at the Barnes & Noble at Preston & Belt Line (address is 616 Preston Royal Shopping Center, Dallas, TX) from 7pm to close. This “club” has no name and no organization, but they’re always there and you can just rotate right into a game. Games are usually 5 0 or 7 0 blitz, but if you take your own set/board/clock you can probably find a longer game if you ask around.

Good luck.Crume

Maq, I don’t know of any day-time chess clubs outside of the Marshall in NYC.

Also, a quick update on the Lewisville TX club. They are moving in April when Borders closes. They aren’t moving far…the B&N referenced is at 3040 & MacArthur, by the Panda Express.

Thanks again Crume,
I’m going to try to make a meeting at Lewisville and introduce myself. It sounds like a nice group to meet and play chess with…

The Lewisville chess club due to the closing of Borders, has moved to the Barnes & Nobles
down the street. They still meet every Thursday night at about 7:00 PM or so. This club
is devoted to casual play, with no tournaments to date.

The Denton Chess Club meets every Monday Night at the Denton North Branch Library
on Locust drive from 6-9 PM, and holds periodic tournaments.

The Tarrant County Chess Club meets at the Barnes & Nobles, Northeast Mall every
Tuesday night, and offers, usually monthly scholastics. Folks start to gather about
6:30-7PM, and stay until closing at 11:00PM.

The Plano Chess Club, a tournament only club, offers tournaments most Saturdays
starting at 2pm. Planochessclub.com. The Irving Valley/Ranch Chess Club also
offers tournaments most Saturdays starting at 2:00 PM as well. The information
for this club is also listed on the Plano CC site.
