Bobby Fischer Memorial

Greetings,

This week’s position comes from:

Shirley Herman v Tom Needham (Online Game Viewer: cschess.webs.com/ )

White to move.

Thanks to Shirley Herman and Tim Brennan! They answered my call for games from the Bobby Fischer Memorial. I chose Shirley’s game for the newsletter so I could give her a hard time about her facebook complaints on the USCF rules being followed. I think the local TDs do a great job, as I have read some of the rulebook and think it is a mess to begin with. You can find Tim’s games in pgn at the bottom and maybe make them into a book for your own profit!

I took some pictures during the third round of the Wednesday & Thursday Panera tournament:

Game Of The Week

This week’s game come from Shirley Herman and her recent strong performance at the Bobby Fischer Memorial. She has only been playing tournament chess for a little over a year and has already gained over 500 rating points. Her results at the Bobby Fischer Memorial pushed her to her current peak rating and into the top 20% of female chess players nationwide. Not bad for a chess mom who is just trying to support her 3 kids’ hobby.

2013 Bobby Fischer Memorial - Round 4

I have only played her in Speed Chess (G5), but from what I can tell, she has a very attacking style. She is always looking for sacrifices and could care less about how much material she has left, if the King is in her sights. In this position, it is white to move and Shirley finds a nice tactic…

I’m curious. What are Ms. Herman’s complaints about the USCF rules? Also, where is the USCF rulebook a mess.

Alex Relyea

In general, her complaints are about TDs using discretion to run tournaments in variance to USCF’s default rules.

One of the complaints, or perhaps questions about the rules, was if TDs could allow unapproved electronic devices to record games in an unadvertised tournament or whether the default rules apply.

One of the items I think is a mess is rule 8.1 about castling, as there is another rule (10.1) creating an exception to the rule so that breaking a rule has no punishment.

Zing…

There was a lot of confusion over the use of electronic devices. Adding to the confusion was some of the rules are in the USCF handbook, some are on the USCF website, and via google searches people were also finding rules for the latest supernationals scholastic event (which had stricter rules), and also rules that were proposed, but not approved, and some people were even quoting FIDE rules.

So you have at least 4-5 sets of rules that people were quoting.

It would be nice if there were one place, where you could go and see all of the rules in one place (for free). Not have to find all of the online “updates”, and cross reference them against a resource that most USCF players do not own in the first place.

Through the “miracle” of a contract that none of us has ever seen USCF is no longer allowed to publish a USCF rulebook.
