Candidates Tournament Suspended

Well, it was inevitable, I guess. The Russian government put a stop on all air traffic with other countries, effective tomorrow, March 27th, as the 1st half of the tournament was completed, and the tournament will be continued at a time to be determined. Wish Fabiano Caruana and the other participants to be safe.

Now, can they get home??

If Dvorkovitch has any common decency left, he and his oligarch friends will charter private jets to take all of the competitors, their support people and journalists back to their home countries.

FIDE said they chartered a jet to take some of the players to Amsterdam. But it was delayed, according Fabiano’s tweet. Now scheduled for 4:50 a.m. local time Friday takeoff(7:50 pm Thursday EST).
“Not entirely sure we’ll be let out of the country,” he added. “Complete farce.”

At least age is on their side.

Hope they are all well. What a mess we are all in

Understatement of the week.

No new Caruana tweets but FIDE tweeted that he flew on Saturday from Amsterdam to St. Lous.

Carlsen said to VG that putting off the 2020 world championship match until 2021 was OK.
If he wins, he is willing to play another title match in 2022.

That’s good to hear. That would give time to run a more inclusive candidate’s tournament in the early part of 2021 using an online format updating the Fischer Havana tournament travel ban work around.

Maybe hold the event in New Zealand, which seems to be handling the virus problems better than most other countries.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, in an interview published today, said he “doesn’t regret anything” about the way FIDE handled the Candidates. All of the decisions made concerning the tournament were “correct.”
He said FIDE is looking to resume the tournament in August or September in the same playing site as before and plans to hold the next world championship match in December-January.
Previously, FIDE said it was proud that it managed to hold half a tournament because it provided so much entertainment for chess fans.
It’s odd that FIDE VP Nigel Short has remained silent about the fiasco after criticizing so many other FIDE decisions made by the previous administrations.

Poor reality interface, Arkady.

Nigel Short interview published today:
If the virus situation improves, FIDE will go ahead with the August-September Candidates resumption and December-January championship match.
If it doesn’t improve, he said, this timetable will be delayed three months.

Dream a little dream for me…
