The issue of gambling and chess was actually decided in NYC by a judge. The City tried to shut down the chess playing in Washington Square Park claiming that the games for money constituted illegal gambling. After hearing expert testimony about the nature of chess and that it did not involve chance, only skill, the court granted an injunction preventing the City from interfering with the chess players.
True. For NYC. That didn’t stop that from becoming a potential issue in Arizona. And of course the event in question was in Boston. Not that any of that matters, since my comment was obviously merely a tongue-in-cheek slap at the media.
I have a vague recollection of the Arizona incident. IIRC, the NY case was used as precedent. As for Boston, one of my favorite memories was the final game in which the Mets took the Series from them back in 1986. That final strikeout was Divine.
