Description

Whether you are a seasoned pro or a beginning player, come join us for the Shortstop Quads before the Portland Beavers baseball game on Tuesday, July 28. After the tournament, relax and enjoy the baseball game with friends and family in premium reserved infield seats at discount prices. All participants receive a Beavers baseball cap and winners get special recognition and awards on the field during the baseball game.

This the Portland Beavers’ “Oregon Chess Recognition Night.” In addition to the chess tournament, a number of exciting chess-related activities will take place:

  • Chuck Schulien–the highest rated chess player in Oregon–will play a simul with up to 20 people before the tournament.

  • Carl Haessler–2009 Oregon state chess champion–will be available during the tournament to analyze games.

  • “Big board” games in the stadium

  • Oregon State Champion Carl Haessler will throw out the first pitch.

  • Winners of each quad will receive their awards on the field during the game.

  • All participants receive a Beavers baseball cap.

WHO: All K-12 players are welcome.

WHEN: July 28. Tournament check-in 1:30-2:15. Players meeting at 2:15. Games begin at 2:30 sharp. Check-in for simul with Chuck Schulien begins at 1:00 with games at 1:15.

WHERE: PGE Park, 1844 SW Morrison in downtown Portland

FORMAT: G/30 quads. Competitors will be placed into groups of four players with similar age and experience level. Each group will play a round robin tournament, so all players will play exactly three games. In each game, each player will have 30 minutes to complete all of his or her moves.

DETAILS: The tournament is an OSCF state championship qualifier, and all games will be NWSRS rated. Notation is not required but strongly encouraged, especially on the higher rated boards. A tournament director will place chess clocks on games that extend beyond 40 minutes of play. At that point each player will have 10 additional minutes to complete his/her moves. Players may use their own clocks for the entire game if: (i) both players wish to use a clock, or (ii) one of the players wishes to use a clock and his/her opponent is rated above 800 NWSRS. If you are new to tournament play and these terms are confusing, you can learn more at oscf.org, or you can just ignore the details and enjoy the games. The basic essentials will be reviewed and explained in the players’ meeting just prior to the games.

COST: $10 for chess + $17 for two tickets and $11 for each additional ticket. All tickets are for reserved infield seats and must be ordered in advance through OSCF (visit the “Online Registration” link at oscf.org). Payment must be received on or before Monday, July 27. Tickets may be picked up at the check-in table for the tournament. Fee for the simul with Chuck Schulien is $5.00.

AWARDS: All players will receive a Beavers hat and special certificate for participation. During the baseball game, winners of each quad will be announced in the stadium and presented with a special award package on the field.

TIEBREAKS: In case of ties, duplicate awards will be given.

REGISTRATION: Online at oscf.org. Deadline is Friday, July 24.

This is absolutely amazing, Rusty. Kudos to the folks who came up with the idea and then made it happen.

For an appropriate donation to your chessclub and or to the ballpark, is it possible to get a Beavers commemorative baseball hat?
