Club Coach

I have another question. It seems they just don’t stop coming. When I get this club started at my university what should I look for in a competitive coach? Should we insist on a minimum rateing? What kind of salary should we be prepared to meet?

I’d ask for references of students or clubs where the prospective coach has worked, and check those references. You want someone who is both a good chess player and a good, clear, patient teacher. I’d ask what the past students’ ratings were, rather than what the coach’s rating is. If the prospect is coaching people at or above the rating at your club, then it should work out.

You might also ask if you can observe the coach while s/he coaches at another spot.

Salary will be an hourly fee. Your coach will likely be working as an independent contractor rather than an employee. That hourly rate varies tremendously with the local market.
