The organizers of the Norway Chess tournament announced their 2016 tournament will not be part of the Grand Chess Tour.
At the same time Magnus Carlsen’s manager said MC will play in that tournament but may not play in the Tour events, like the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis.
Two days later, details of the 2016 US Championship in St. Louis are announced.
The dates are almost identical to the dates of Norway Chess 2016.
That mean the two tournaments will compete for the attention of fans. It also means high-rated Americans who might have been invited to Stavanger will have to choose between the two events.
