I was saddened to hear the news that Dale Lyons had passed away last weekend during the Portsmouth Open in New Hampshire: masschess.org/about/chess_news.aspx
Dale was an active tournament player, both in his home state of Vermont and in numerous other New England and upstate New York tournaments. He was a familiar face to me for many years, going back to the first tournaments I directed in Vermont in the early 1990’s. I always enjoyed talking with him in those events through the years. My condolences to his family.
I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve known Dale since my days attending college in Burlington back in the 70s. He was very active in the Burlington Chess Club. I last saw him at the NY State Championship. We both played in the under 2000 section. We chatted for awhile and caught up on old times. I had last seen him before that at the 2007 NYS Championship.
He helped me out in the last round by beating one the 1700s that I was competing with for under 1800 money. In fact when I left the tournament he was down the exchange, but he fault back and won.
RIP You’ll be missed by the New England chess community and by everyone you knew.
