As the Olympiad winds down the FIDE GA starts 7 August in Chennai. The 1st order of business will be several reports. Then the presidential election will take place. This is the 1st election cycle under the revised charter adopted 2 years ago. It will be interesting.
The FIDE Presidential election was more predictable than interesting. Dvorkovich won 157 to 16 over Baryshpolets. The International Chess Federation is still solidly in Russian control.
Michael was reelected as an independent VP. He took the final position on the 2nd ballot.
Most of day 1 was spent voting for presidential ticket, elected VPs, and commission members. Since this is done by a roll call with a paper ballot it and may involve multiple rounds it can take a while. The number who show up today will likely drop by about 1/3. There are various other items on the agenda but any debate of proposals on the floor is rare. Only voting delegates or federation presidents are allowed to speak.
The CCA election was not held at the FIDE meeting. A continental GA has been called for 1 Oct in Costa Rica. One of the presidential candidates was appointed as a FIDE VP and must resign from the race CCA statutes do not allow that slate to replace him. So there will be less drama to the meeting. But we must attend as the CCA appointments will be discussed and continental events planned. Michael K will attend as our voting delegate and I attend as zonal president.
