Grand Prix and My Ignorance is Showing

Today I wanted to find documentation of the Grand Prix. How points are calculated for a TLA? The difference between grand prix and enhanced grand prix.

I looked in Chess Life, and only found a statement about an error in points a while back. I was unable to find any links online with this information. I am confused about “Enhanced” Grand Prix - were those the special temporary rules approved by the EB that end at the end of this month? I looked under the old grand prix standings pages, the articles that referred to the grand prix, the rulebook, the page of tournament forms.

So I’m feeling confused. Am I really missing something straightforward - or - are we once again making this too hard?

Any quick assistance would be most appreciated.

At the beginning of the TLA section in chess life (print or pdf) there is a section about the health and benefits fund. Committing to pay $1 more per player increases the Grand Prix status by one level.

Looking at tournament organizers (home page) and then Grand Prix there was a list of links for a monthly standings summary.

June 2020 is the last Grand Prix summary but it also has the rules of the Grand Prix.

Thanks. Looks like I had the right idea of looking in Tournament Life and just gave up to fast - so I didn’t hit the right Chess Life for the summary. Any idea of what the “enhanced” Grand Prix is?

Enhanced means an event moves up one step on the GP point scale based on the prizes offered, in return for paying $1 per player in that section to the PPHBF. This, plus occasional contributions to the fund, is how the fund has been built up over the years.

For example, if an event was 6 points, making it an enhanced event moves it up to 10 points, a 10 point event becomes a 15 point enhanced event, etc.

Thanks. Yes, have done that. Never knew it was called “Enhanced.”

I thought the write-up in Chess Life (and/or the website) used the term ‘enhanced’, apparently it does not. I’ll suggest it be added in the future.

Thanks Mike. I feel less ignorant than a couple of days ago.
