USCF, sent me a flier, and it included a chess puzzle. I studied and studied it and thought I had the answer. But then I found a move for black thats avoids the checkmate, I think?? Sorry I do not have the softwear to set up the pieces. The position is, White: Kh1, Rf1, Pe2, Bg2, Ph2, Pb3, Nc3, Qg3, Rf4, Pd5, Nf7
Black: Ra8, Re8, Bf8, Kg8, Bb7, Pg7, Ph7, Qb6, Pd6, Ng6, Pc5
White to move and win! I thought white Qg3xNg6, so after Ph7xQ, white plays Rf4 to h4 to win! but if black does not take the queen, and plays Bf8 to e7, I cannot find a move for white except retreat the Queen??? Hope some one will help, it is bugging the heck out of me, thanks! Bob
I think your move is fine. “Move and win” doesn’t mean it HAS to be mate. Grabbing a free knight is probably enough to win this game. You can follow Be7 with Qe6 and even threaten a Smothered Mate.

Thank you! Thank You! I will sleep good to night! lolo Oh, when I hit the solution, it would not come up. Just wondering where I could get the soft wear to make a chess board like you did, and set up the pieces? I am really behind the times, But I once heard the less you know, the better off one may be!? Bob
It’s online. The website gives you the option to download pictures or to link them for web sites.
