IM RR norm event requirement question

Earlier today, I was looking through the most recent FIDE title regulations.

At one time, there was an option where you could use two GMs instead of three IMs to meet the minimum titleholder requirement for an IM RR norm tournament. However, I can’t seem to locate that verbiage now. (It’s been over a year since I last looked at the requirements, and these have an effective date of 7/1/14.)

So, my question is, can an organizer still use two GMs in place of three IMs to meet the minimum titleholder requirement, or must there now be three GM/IM titleholders in the field? Thanks in advance.

Those “equivalencies” went away in the 2014 revision to the title norm regulations. Under the current regulations, for an IM norm in a nine round event, the player must face at least three GM or IM opponents. (For completeness, for a WGM norm, the requirement is 3 GM/IM/WGM opponents; for a WIM norm, 3 GM/IM/WGM/WIM opponents.)

Thanks. I was doing a little research for an organizer who wants to put together a norm event. I’m glad I re-read the regulations before answering his question on that in the affirmative.

Actually, I think the change was made in 2013, not 2014. I checked the 2013 version of the Arbiter’s Manual, and the title regulations therein did not have the equivalencies. But I do remember them from the FA seminar back in 2010.

Yup those were gutted because there were some goofy ones like 3 FM’s and you can award WIM norms.

That seems like only yesterday when we did that!

I checked my old email - it’s been almost two years since I last read up on this.

Not to mention, 4.5 years since that seminar…lol

Ahem - both of you need to take the refresher seminar. :smiling_imp: It’s being offered online now.

In English? I wish I could have gone to the last refresher you had in person, but you scheduled it at the same time as my son’s graduation!!!

Well Tom we see you’ve got your priorities all messed up!

Yes it’s in English.
