I’ll be visiting New Orleans in late April for Jazz Fest. I plan to look up Jude Acers and donate some money to him over the board. Does anyone know his preferences when playing White? Most of the games for him at Chess.com are 1e4 openings. Is that a true indicator.
If you indicate that you’re going to make a large enough donation, I’d bet you can convince him to go with 1.g4 …
…or even 1.Na3.
LOL. I’m happy to play against 1e4. I’ll use the Center-Counter with either 3…Qd6 or maybe the Portuguese Variation if I’ve been imbibing in The Quarter.
I think Sam has posted that Jude’s name is pronounced as “achers.” Not hat Sam used that particular word …
Maybe I’ll just call him “Red?”
I recall his name was pronounced the same way as the plural of a farm land measurement.
Mr. V. say “Hi” to Jude for me! He won’t answer my e-mails for some reason which he has never told me.

You’re kinda legendary, too.

Barnstorming was big back then: Acers got nice crowds at Shamokin PA & Lewisburg PA; a couple years later, I remember playing Kavalek at Lewisburg and Browne at Bloomsburg.
I remember that back in the early 1970’s Jude Acers went around the country giving simuls. He was invited by a local high school to give a talk and play all comers. As I recall, only 6 players showed up. Undeterred, he took the event seriously and played us like it was the end of the world if he didn’t win. I drew a game with him in a Benko Gambit, the first time I had every seen this opening. He won the other games and was gracious with his time in analyzing the games with us. We felt bad so few players showed up; we high schoolers took him out to dinner. He regaled us with stories about chess in the US, about Fischer, and about other chess stars before disappearing into the night.
You shouldn’t be posting your strategy in advance. He’s probably studying your games already.

He won’t find any with 3…Qd6. But, if he contacts Brian Mottershead he’ll be able to obtain a couple.
I was in the French Quarter on Labor Day and never found him around the French Market and Cafe du Mond. Exactly where does he set up? Or When?
Jackson Square and some neighboring streets were blocked off while they are building a temp stage and camera platforms for the NFL kickoff on Thurs. It always is a hassle driving in the FQ, but now it is even more so.
For the last two days I got to the Cafe du Mond as well as the Gazebo (3/15 &3/16). Still no luck.
