I agree.
I’ve struck out the last few times I’ve tried to find Acer’s table in the French Quarter, does he still play? If so, what time of day?
Try Jude 1pm on per the article about him. He still plays. Google search will even get you some recent photos. Have not heard yet if he is going to play in the World Senior this year as he has done the last several.
The article says he is going to play in the World Senior again. I had not gotten that far in reading the article when I posted the bit about not knowing if he would repeat his play in the Senior of recent years. Mike Schemm of Seattle WA who played last year told me he is going again.
What a great article! Brings back a lot of great names from the past.
Lone Pine is not on top of any mountain; it is 10,000 feet below the six 14,000 ft mountains that tower over it. I understand that Statham’s wife hated almost all chessplayers. I went to watch the Lone Pine tournament one time. Chess groupies chasing the young players all over town; who can imagine now chess groupies! There was one after Yasser over and over again and he could not move fast enough to keep away from her.
I haven’t been to Lone Pine in 15-20 years. The 4th of July is coming up and I’ve got gas money. I wonder if the ghosts of Mr. and Mrs. Statham and the chess groupies haunt the little town hall that Statham built.
Saw Schemm, who beat Acers in the last round of last year’s event, up at the Grand Pacific Open in Victoria this year. He was very enthusiastic about the World Senior.
