Lyndonville Chess Club Non-Rated Swiss

We had the first round of our four round, one per week, Swiss last night. We had seven participants, three of whom are new to visiting the club. The age spread was something like 19 to mid-60’s. The G-60 format left plenty of time for casual play afterwards. Lots of good kibitzing and laughter. One of the casual games was between one of our regulars and a new attendee. It was quite a struggle and ended with an adjournment with a sealed move. Very re-computer. So I have the sealed move and we’ll continue next week with the game and tournament. Would you like to peek into the envelope and tell us what the sealed move was? We promise not to tell anybody.

Bill Smythe

After how long did you call for adjournment at G/60?

Alex Relyea

It wasn’t one of the G-60 games. Mike finished his tournament game and Brian Kelly arrived a few minutes later. Their game went on, sans clock, for about an hour and a half until 9PM when we had to close up. Normally, I would have stayed another half hour or so, but they were playing slowly and I was feeling tired like I’m fighting a cold. So, a little after 9, I asked Brian, playing White, if he would seal a move which he readily agreed to and did.

LOL! No. I sealed it without looking at it. I’m going to study the position in the meantime and see if I can come up with Whites move and black’s reply. I’ll post my guess here in a few days if you care to do the same.

Are you going to post your guess, and solicit others’ guess replies, before or after the game is actually competed?

Bill Smythe

I’ll post what I think White’s move is and the best reply by tomorrow evening. No computer analysis by me or anyone else.

You may want to first make sure they are both fine with the probability of public analysis. Since it is not rated they may be okay with it.

Not a problem.
I think White’s sealed move is Qxa6. Then Black will/should play Rxb2

Round 1 Cross-Table and Round 2 Pairings can be found at the Lyndonville Chess Club Facebook Page

So are there any further updates to the tournament?

Alex Relyea

The result are all on the Lyndonville Chess Club’s Facebook page.

We received photo coverage in our local newspaper.

Congratulations on becoming a master, Brian!

LOL! Master of the non-rated Universe. :sunglasses:
