I found an obituary of someone formerly active in this state on this website, but there were no links to it. It can be found under Governance, but nothing in Governance points to it.
Another website orphan, unfortunately.
I hadn’t realize this page existed. It was depressing scanning thru it. There are several names on there of people I have played and worked with on tournaments thru the years. All people I enjoyed being acquainted with.
If you click on ‘About USCF’ in the left hand column, that brings up a list of several pages, the link to the ‘in passing’ page is at the bottom of that list.
I don’t think it’s under ‘governance’ at all. And it’s not a page that has been orphaned.
Not orphaned, but definitely given to the wrong parent. The page itself has Governance highlighted on the left pane and in the crumbs on top. It needs to be fixed to remove it from under Governance and place it straight under About.
I was saddened too to find a very nice player I had a met a few years ago, Turker Ozbek.
It would be nice if the list were ordered by date, most recently deceased first. That’s how I scanned it (search for 2010 first, then 2009, and so on). A lot of people don’t have a date though. I’ll contact Joan to see what she thinks.
Even the page name (‘in passing’) isn’t something that is obviously a reference to deceased chess players.
Mike, on a sad note, to me, I do need to report a Life Member that passed away in the last month.
Robert L. Sphar, ID # 10338107, passed away on January 11th of this year.
I had originally met Bob in 1988 when I started playing tournament chess. After moving to Peoria in 1996, we ran into each other and talked. He told me he had quit playing tournament chess and wanted to get into running. I mentioned that I had done quite a bit of running and other training for running, biathlon and triathlon racing. I told him I could easily help him put a training program together and show him how to get into distance running. We would run together at least once a week, and usually more frequently, for 3 to 4 years. I tried getting him to come back to chess with him coming back to the club twice in that time, but it never stuck. He did get into playing chess on the internet via the playchess.de server after I introduced him to it.
I didn’t see him for awhile since I got busy with different optometry activities, but we still would get together for a run now and then. I actually thought about giving him a call to see if he wanted to get a run in at exactly the same time they took him off life support. Obviously I didn’t know he was ill. I decided that I needed to give it a few weeks before calling him. He passed away within an hour and fifteen minutes of that. I’m sad.
Bob was found to be ill with mesothelioma at the end of December and after 2 major operations in early January he passed away. He went quickly. I spoke with a mutual friend that said he had had problems breathing since about Labor Day and had to walk a 3 mile race on Thanksgiving.
Could you please put Bob on the deceased list and have the magazine stopped?
The preferred method of reporting deceased members is to send that information to Joan Dubois via email.
