online instruction for beginners

I’m looking for an online chess instructional course for my son. He’s 15 years old and rated under 500.

I would consider a DVD-based program as well, but I’ve not seen any that I like.

Thanks,

Angelo DePalma

I would recommend the Chess Magnet School site. chessmagnetschool.com/

In addition to the mate-in-2 or win-material-in-X moves problems you would expect they have other types of problems as well. Furthermore there’s usually a “LESSON” button for each of the problems that expands on and instructs in the topic of that particular problem.

Check it out. They have a 30-day free trial I believe.

I don’t know any online courses for rank beginners, but I highly recommend Chessmaster. You don’t need the latest version either. I think you can usually find slightly older versions of Chessmaster for about $20.

The program has some really excellent lessons, designed to teach someone that has never played chess to around 1500 uscf. There are some puzzles for higher rated players, but the core lessons are definately designed to teach lower level to average level players.

There is a similar thread recently that I"ll point to you. It has plenty of links for chess sites: http://main.uschess.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=14987

Thanks to both posters for some good advice. I welcome any additional suggestions.
