Police play chess with juveniles

In the past two months I read an article on the Internet - possibly a newspaper article - about a city where policemen invited juveniles from a high crime area to play chess with them. The juveniles got to meet uniformed police in a friendly atmosphere, learned a non-gang activity and learned reasoning skills which helped them socially and with the school work. I’d like to read that article again and present it to our local police, but I can’t find the source. If you know where I can find this article, please post the source.

I found the following just looking for the words police juveniles chess. HTH

Perhaps this article from the Independent about an intervention plan in London - not quite what you had described but possibly it? Closest I could find in a fast online search…

(Actually, a couple of Warren’s articles are a closer match. )

I’m not sure if Norfolk, VA is the area where the event you saw took place. The events organized by Lisa Suhay happened here. Some links are:

In addition to promoting chess, Lisa is a noted children’s author. PS, the focus on chess in Norfolk is not about high crime areas.
