Ratings Distribution Charts

Does the USCF still publish the “Ratings Distribution Charts” which list the numbers of players at a certain levels, and their national percentiles? I’ve been in some discussion with folks, and the last ones I can find (on the old website, btw) were from 2002 & 2004. Also, is there a place where I can find a list of current internationally titled players (GM/IM/FM, at least, although Women’s titles would be helpful, too)? I’ve searched the site(s) for long enough–I’m calling in for help. Thanks!

We didn’t do them in graphical form, but we did create ratings distribution charts for the 2006 and 2007 ratings lists, they’re available on the BINFO system as BINFOs 200604163 and 200702379.

There are lists of titled players in the annual Yearbook (see the latest yearbook from the April issue of Chess Life at main.uschess.org/content/view/8280/445/)

I’ve also added check boxes to select only GMs, IMs, FMs or CMs to the ‘State Top Player Lists’, which can also generate an ‘all states’ list.

See main.uschess.org/datapage/top-players.php

(We only update FIDE title information when we get the quarterly FIDE Ratings List, so the titles for players who were recently awarded titles at the last FIDE Presidential board meeting won’t show up until the July FRL comes out in a few days.)

Well, excuse me for being dense, but what’s BINFO and where can I find it? I’d be curious to see these distribution charts, but I don’t know my way around the site well enough to know where to look.

See secure.uschess.org/binfo/. I believe there is some way to get there from the main page, but it’s simpler to bookmark it.

I have posted 3 graphs showing the distribution of regular ratings on the 2007 Annual Ratings List. Each has three curves, one with the distribution of only established ratings, one with the distribution of only provisional published ratings and one with both provisional and established ratings.

main.uschess.org/datapage/ratings_2007.png shows the distribution of all players listed on the 2007 Annual Ratings List, including non-members.

main.uschess.org/datapage/adult_ratings_2007.png shows the distribution of adults (21 or older) on the 2007 Annual Ratings List.

main.uschess.org/datapage/junior … s_2007.png shows the distribution of juniors (under 21) on the 2007 Annual Ratings List.

Thanks for the expedient and informative replies!

Some browsers may have problems displaying PNG files (AOL, for example.) I will try to get JPEG versions of these graphs posted tomorrow.

Copies of the 3 ratings distribution graphs are now available as

Thanks!

I find it very interesting. I had always had the belief that “C” players were the “middle of the road”, as it were. Yet, for strictly adult players (established that is), it’s the “B” player that’s in the middle. Meanwhile, when all established players are charted, the “C” player ranks around the 70 percentile group and it’s the “E” player that comes at the mid-point.

I don’t know if it means anything but it’s still fascinating to me.

If you or a friend are handy with statistics and a spreadsheet program you can use the ratings lists to generate your own analysis.

For instance, Steve Eddins created some graphs based on the June 2008 list. See his blog at http://www.eddins.net/steve/chess/2008/06/06/131 to check it out.

For those who don’t have access to rating lists…. You’ll be a better player for knowing the rules deeply, and more TDs are simply a good thing for your local chess community.

Earlier today I created a table showing the breakdown by ratings classes for current USCF members by membership type. Here it is:

The distribution here is not going to be quite the same as that on the annual ratings list, because there are members listed here with a published rating but who have not played in any USCF rated games in several years.

Hi, I realize this is an old thread. However, I could not find on the US Chess Web site a current chart of how US Chess ratings are distributed. I’m looking for graphs that show the curve of ratings (low to high, how many at each rating level) and also answer questions such as what is the average rating for adults? What is the average rating for children and adults combined? If there are updated charts or links, please either post them here or message me. Thanks.
