I’m looking for the 2003 top players list among others (2001-2004 range). Where can I go to find these?
The best source for information that far back is probably the printed rating supplements.
Not sure what you mean by printed rating supplements.
Well, I assume you’re looking for Top 100 lists (which were initially Top 50 lists.)
Originally, the only place those were available was in the printed rating supplements that we sent out every other month to USCF affiliates. However, we discontinued the printed rating supplements in 2007. Thus if you can find someone who has those older printed supplements, you can get the information out of them. (Many TDs have them, for example.)
It appears the current website only has them back to late 2006 at this time.
There do appear to be top player lists back to April 1996 on the older (archive) website.
Transferring that data from the older versions of the website to the current one was apparently not one of the tasks that the developers of the current website did.
Those files are in older formats that are incompatible with the method that is used for top lists since 2006, and the links to get to them on archive.uschess.org don’t all work. (The format also appears to have changed several times between 1998 and 2006, which would complicate adding them to the current website.)
If you can tell me EXACTLY what data you’re looking for, ie, what category of players (top players, top women, top age XX) and what months, I can probably give you links that will work to get to them, though some of them may not display very well.
Thanks a lot for the help Nolan. I will give you the ages and years I’m looking for in a bit. I have school right now followed by work directly afterwards so I’m not going to have any free time until later.
Got a break, here they are. Top 9 year olds from Aug 2001 to february 2002. Top 10 year olds from April 2002 to february 2003. Top 11 year olds from April 2003 to February 2004. Top 12 year olds from April 2004 to February 2005. Then top 13 year olds from April 2005 to December2005.
Thanks a lot for the help Nolan, wish it was easier to access these.
Yeah, I wish it was easier to access all our archival data, too. (There are hundreds if not thousands of pages of data that never got ported over to the new website, for quite a few of them there’s not even a defined place to put that information.)
I’ll try to get some URLs to you in a PM by tomorrow.
Here they are. I decided to post them as well as PM them in the event others are looking for similar lists.
The variations on directory name, file name and capitalization are rather frustrating.
