Re-Rating Chess Tournaments

I have two chess tournaments that I need to re-reate one section each due to the use of a wrong player ID number. (Common name, nearly the same geographical location in a large state.) One was just rated this month (Dec) and one was in March.

How do I submit tournaments for rerating? TIA.

Corrections to rated events should be sent to ratingsmgr@uschess.org or use the contact form with the subject ‘Ratings Issue or Question’.

The FAQ on the TD/A home page has an entry on what information is needed. When correcting IDs we need to make sure we have the correct pairing # to change, which gets complicated if IDs appear in an event more than once. Also, the pairing #'s shown on MSA are not the ones in internal USCF records, because we reorder them on MSA to put the players in score group order.

Rerates are scheduled once a week (usually Tuesdays) with another rerate just ahead of the creation of the next official Rating List. When an event within the rerate window (initially rated since January 1, 2004) is corrected the ratings from that event will be updated during the next rerate.

A 10 month old tournament can be rerated?

When you do that, does it actually recalculate all subsequent ratings based on the rerated tournament? Because of all the ripple effects that could happen you could end up changing ratings all across the country, although in very few cases would it be by more than a handful of points.

Yes

and yes

In this case the wrong player ID was listed. So the re-rate corrects that error. Published ratings stand because they were official.

Yes, correcting a single event from months or even years ago can have ripple effects involving many other players, though interestingly enough the player who started the ripples may not see any change in his or her current rating if he or she has played enough games in between the corrected event and today.

The goal of rerating is to produce the ratings that would have been computed in the first place had all events been submitted accurately and promptly.

So far in 2011 the USCF has posted 779 corrections. 538 involved changing the result of one or more games, 235 involved changing the ID of a player and 6 involved changing both the ID and one or more results for that player. That’s out of 274,328 records, or a correction rate of .00284. 2010 and 2009 had similar error rates.

(Of course keep in mind that changing ONE result usually creates TWO correction records, one for each player.)

I just submitted the two tournaments for re-rating.
