Reviving a defunct chess club

I am trying to revive a chess club in my town. I know this would probably be more fit for the “Chess Clubs” area but this appears to be the only place I currently am allowed to post. (Could someone move it please?)

I am working with my city’s rec department to get it going again. The last rated event held was 2015. I thought it would be cool to get the old affiliate ID back so the history would be preserved. The fellow that was running it had a stroke, though, and is unable to help. The only other person I can find that directed tournaments under that affiliate ID I can’t get a hold of. Does anyone have suggestions? Is there someone I could contact in USCF that might be able to help? Or should I just give up on the little whimsy and register a new affiliate?

This looks like a fit for membership@uschess.org, which handles membership issues including affiliate issues.

If you give them the affiliate ID, note that it’s been expired for a while, and ask how you could revive it, I’d think they’d be able to make it happen.

Hi elizae, I did exactly that in my area of N. Florida. The club became inactive when one person was no longer able to support it. People who used to be part of the club asked if I would revive it and we did. It started just as suggested by renewing the affiliate and changing the contact information. Then advertisement via social media, a simple website and establishing a routine of weekly quick rated meet ups and rated quarterly tournaments. Make sure to collect contact information from everyone you meet and build from there. People love chess and it was not hard to do.
