Scholastic question

I was thinking about this when I read another thread…

How would a TD would declare a game in which the players (being young), are not pushing the clock (or not using a clock), and neither player really understands how to mate the other (and oblivious to the fact one of the player’s time flag had long fallen, if using a clock.)

I haven’t helped a sholastic tournament in at least 15 years, back in my college days, (and haven’t read the official rulebook in nearly as long).

-I mostly play online chess, btw. Occassionally I’ll trek to a larger city for some weekend OTB chess.

I know, I keep telling myself to get a current copy of the rule book, but somehow it keeps getting pushed to the “I’ll get to that later” pile of things to do.

If both flags fall, the TD may declare the game to be a draw. A TD or deputy may also count for 50 moves.

Assuming this isn’t a rated game, I would probably declare the game a draw. If it was a rated game I would consider moving them both to a non-rated section.

I was once working at a scholastic tournament where a player with King and Rook versus King did not know how to mate. Eventually the two players came up to me and asked “Can we finish the game?” I simply told them that at any time during a game two players can agree to a draw. I think you can guess what happened next.

Did you mention that either player could resign at any point during the game? Maybe the guy with the rook would have resigned!
