Can a filter be added to allow a search for “Senior” tournaments?
There is one. There’s a word filter and you can use the word “senior”. Granted, you may get events directed by a Senior TD, held at a senior center, or with references to a high school senior. But I use it constantly to search for Irwin qualifiers, and I don’t think I’ve ever gotten more than three pages of returns.
I would also encourage you, if you’re on Facebook, to join the US Chess Senior Players group, which I’m an admin for. Make sure you answer the questions and agree to group rules! I post all the Irwin qualifiers I find out about there, and others sometimes post senior tournaments and tournaments with Senior prizes or discounted entry fees.
A search for ‘senior’ came up with 39 events, also matching ‘senior citizen’, ‘senior member’ and ‘senior rate’. It might have found ‘senior high school’, too.
The challenge here is how does an organizer code his event to meet all the possible subgroups that might be interested in it? Both the TLA submission form and the search form could wind up with another dozen checkboxes. (And just what is a ‘senior’ event anyway?)
What age does US chess consider someone to be senior? 50? 65?
It depends on the context. For the senior membership rate, 65. For eligibility to the US Senior Open, 50. Not sure if FIDE senior events use a different age criteria.
From looking at various advertised events, such as the Team Seniors, FIDE appears to offer 50+ and 65+ as separate sections.
In Texas, players in our state senior championship are required to be at least 50.
In NC we use “Super Senior” to mean 65+ tournaments/sections. I am not sure from where that came.
On July 20th we have our 2nd annual Super Senior State Championship.
