Seniors Get No Respect

Senior chess is the Rodney Dangerfield of the chess world. The latest example emanates from Chessbase. This is posted on the website (chessbase.com):
FIDE August ratings – on a monthly basis
05.08.2012 – The world rankings will in future be published every month, a move we heartily applaud. We have decided to display the top twenty in each category – players, women, juniors, girls – with links to the full lists on the FIDE pages.

There is a Senior World Championship tournament and a title to the winner. One would think that would be reason enough to include Seniors in such a list.

If anything you should probably blame FIDE. Their source page does not have a senior list.

The USCF tracks top players (USCF only and Any Federation) over 65. Click here.

I believe that in ICCF, Seniors are referred to as Veterans.

I have told people that in time zones farther west, you get to retire years earlier, e.g., 65 Eastern is 64 Central.

The U.S. Senior Open is for players 50+, so why shouldn’t the USCF produce a rating list for players that age so that the two categories match, instead of only a 65+ age list?
